The skins delicate and balanced microflora

Our skin houses a diverse population of microbes and just as they do in the gut, these microbes can have a destructive effect if not kept in balance.

Our skins pH is the primary regulator of our microbe population. Having a slightly acidic pH, our acid mantle is a crucial regulator of the skins microbe colony size and balance.

When using excessive alkaline products (soaps and detergents) and constantly exposing the skin to water, we lose our protective lipid layer, subsequently causing an imbalance to our skins flora. An uncontrollable proliferation of microbes of various strains has been linked to many skin conditions.

Acne Vulgaris, Rosacea, Eczema for example have been shown to be associated with an underlying microbial infestation of Propionbacterium (p acnes), Demodex Folliculorium (rosacea), D. Brevis and Staphylococcus aureus.  These microbes initiate an inflammatory reaction and increase the skin sensitivity and dehydration.

Therefore; maintaining our skins acid mantle is crucial to protect our natural flora and inhibit the chances of an imbalance of our wardrobe of microbes.

Watch the facial cleanser you use, and if using detergents on a daily basis, you may need to wear protective gloves. Protecting your skins acid mantle is key to keeping your microbes balanced and happy.

Do you suffer with inflammation and sensitivity? Perhaps by simply changing the cleanser you use, this may help with rebuilding and protecting your skins acid mantle.
